Progression
Mordecai's lecture after the Juicer (ch. 25): the llama's throat, the boss's vein, the Hoarder's mouth — 'There will always be clues. Look for them.' Carl already had the habit — the 9.8 experience points in ch. 20 — and it becomes the book's structure: the spiral's peepholes and the ball's ninety-degree bounce (ch. 26); the smoothie bicycle and recipe card in the corner (ch. 33–ch. 34); Rory's throwaway line about stairs, remembered a floor later (ch. 39, ch. 41); the caged dingoes (ch. 45). 'As unfair as this world was, it was still a game. There were puzzles and hidden paths to survival.'
