Mongo

The pet Donut chooses from the kobolds' menagerie on the second floor — a seven-inch, pink-feathered 'Mongoliensis' that bites her nose and fights anything it sees. Bonded as her Royal Steed hours before the floor closes. Odette supplies the translation: velociraptor.

Through book 1

Chosen in B1 ch. 46, bonded in B1 ch. 47, identified as a velociraptor in the epilogue. Everything about him is prospective: level one, seven inches, 'fully grown at level 15,' and Odette's warning that the nose chomps will not be adorable when he is. The series will grow him.

Through book 2

From level 3 to 12 in eight days; from turkey-sized to almost as tall as Carl's waist; from a nose-chomper to the thing that held the pyramid alone all night (B2 ch. 12). Fangs that spark and poison, a carrier, a bond with Donut that survives a salamander, a dwarf's arm and a lavender rinse. Odette's warning is now a fact: he is no longer adorable when he bounces.

Through book 3

Mongo reaches level 15 and full size on the second day — pony-high, thirteen feet with the tail — and gains Earthquake (B3 ch. 7); he is level 26 by the end of the floor. A fan box gives him a red-and-blue saddle, which Donut rides through a wall in the trainyard (B3 ch. 7, B3 ch. 33). Because the interdiction carts want a pair of gnoll hands and Katia's gnoll is only 98% accepted, Mongo is given the job of killing Growler Gary fourteen times (B3 ch. 26), and twice more when the carts come up a pair short (B3 ch. 27). Zev's reminder: 'dungeon-born pets are considered Borant property' (B3 ch. 25).

Through book 4

Level 29 to 33: two clockwork copies eaten by a lizard (B4 ch. 3); a goose he cannot hurt and a panic in Donut (B4 ch. 16); a pink rabbit stolen from a dead child's room and given to a living one (B4 ch. 17); four robot Donuts decapitated (B4 ch. 13); fang caps for speed and strength; and the Scree worm that was Maggie My chewed to mulch, vomited, and eaten again (B4 ch. 34).

Through book 5

Called by his own kind, mated to a pack leader (B5 ch. 11); a litre of blood for a potion (B5 ch. 46); a lightning bolt from the queen's familiar (B5 ch. 51); a moonwalk (B5 ch. 70); Vrah torn apart with Kiwi, and finished on Carl's word (B5 ch. 75). His mate leaves as a bear.

Through book 6

Level 40; slug duty; a movie star; eats a legendary before it wakes; a turkey massacre, unconsciousness, a slide toward a cliff; saves Carl from Alpha Carl's foot (B6 ch. 16, B6 ch. 21, B6 ch. 27, B6 ch. 39, B6 ch. 42, B6 ch. 46). His right wing burned off by Carl's Self-Immolation, a potion promised (B6 ch. 72).

Through book 7

A wing regrown, a meatball swallowed, a bear who goes to him low (B7 ch. 3, B7 ch. 5, B7 ch. 13); credited with an empress (B7 ch. 27); quilled from the inside by a rottweiler and saved by Rend (B7 ch. 72); a father of two Ursensus, legendary, and the killer of Warlord Epitome Tagg by beak — 'a present for the baby shower' (B7 ch. 82, B7 ch. 84).

Through book 8

Donut's seat in the truck, then a horn: 'Make way for the big shot' (B8 ch. 3, B8 ch. 5). He gets the Nemes of Pestilence and kukri claw caps (B8 ch. 8, B8 ch. 90); he guards Hedy and, once Jamal is down from the ceiling, curls up next to him (B8 ch. 44); he lands tail-first in a bar fight and eats a fairy (B8 ch. 57); he tea-bags a dead mimic (B8 ch. 86) and marches the parade on foot (B8 ch. 90).

By book

Mongo in book 1 — Dungeon Crawler Carl

Won from the kobolds' pet reward room in ch. 46 over Carl's preference for the brindle grub — a seven-inch raw-chicken dinosaur with pink feathers, red-tagged, hostile to everything and most of all to Donut's nose. The description says a Mongoliensis is never tamed, only respected, and that reaching level 15 is as likely as a West Virginia cheerleader reaching eighteen a virgin.

The bonding takes the rest of the floor (ch. 47): Mordecai explains that pet-class mobs stay level one until bonded; Donut teaches him to unzip a grub; dog commands work except 'stay'; his dot goes white after his first kills and orange — Royal Steed — when Donut decapitates a vespa to save him. The whole process, for whatever reason, is 'endlessly amusing to the general public'. In the epilogue Odette supplies the translation Carl had missed: velociraptor.

Mongo in book 2 — Carl's Doomsday Scenario

Level 3 and pink-feathered at the Pug (ch. 5); leaping twenty feet from a standstill (ch. 12); waist-high at level 10 (ch. 12) and level 12 by the elf fight (ch. 18). The floor's set piece for him is the night alone: left to guard an unconscious Donut inside a pyramid of junk, he holds off a swarm of street urchins until both of them are pincushions and his health is deep in the red — 'You saved Donut' (ch. 12). Fang Caps make his bite spark and poison (ch. 14); a pet carrier lets him rest and keeps him out of the Desperado Club (ch. 14); Clockwork Triplicate gives him clockwork friends who carry dynamite, spy scrolls and howls onto rooftops (ch. 14, ch. 21). He eats a salamander and a dwarf's arm, twice (ch. 20), bites krasue heads in a muted room (ch. 22), and, watching his own recap montage, bounces as a mastiff-sized dinosaur who grunts now instead of squeaking (ch. 14).

Mongo in book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

Level 15 and full-grown by ch. 7 — pony-high, thirteen feet with the tail, Earthquake on a jump — then 23 by ch. 26 and 26 by ch. 31. Immune to the cornets' Queasy (ch. 6); thrown by Gore-Gore with one backhand (ch. 11); a saddle he hates and a rider he throws onto the alchemy table (ch. 10); two clockwork copies lost testing a third rail, one to the rail and one to a train (ch. 10). He runs the track with Donut aboard, 'REALLY, REALLY FAST' by her report (ch. 14, ch. 15), kills Growler Gary fourteen times face first (ch. 26), dances in a room of blood (ch. 29), and carries Donut through a wall to Carl (ch. 33). 'Dungeon-born pets are considered Borant property.' 'Mongo is not anybody's property. This is an outrage!' (ch. 25)

Mongo in book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods

Level 29 at the floor's start and 33 by its middle: two clockwork copies scout a sandstorm and are eaten by a thorny devil (ch. 3); he dances in a broken water main (ch. 20); attacks a goose he cannot hurt and loses a chunk while Donut panics (ch. 16); steals a pink rabbit from a dead family's house and gives it to a gnome girl (ch. 16, ch. 17); decapitates four robot Donuts (ch. 13, ch. 15); gets fang caps for speed and strength (ch. 13); and chews the Scree worm that was Maggie My to mulch, vomits her up, and eats her again (ch. 34). Twinkle Toes now makes him fast. Loita threatens to feed him to a mob.

Mongo in book 5 — The Butcher's Masquerade

Mongo chomps the second weasel (ch. 2), is barred at a bridge by a poster (ch. 10), and is called into the jungle by his own kind, where he mates with the pack leader and comes home drunk (ch. 11, ch. 12). He dives into a boss's wound and eats his way out the back (ch. 27), shakes Samantha like a chew toy (ch. 24), gives a litre of blood for a potion (ch. 46), is circled, presented to and claimed (ch. 49), and nearly dies to a lightning bolt from the queen's familiar (ch. 51). He moonwalks (ch. 70). At the party, in a fallen crab costume, he and Kiwi tear Vrah apart, and Carl tells him to make it hurt (ch. 74, ch. 75). Donut rides him through the pit (ch. 76); he is sad afterwards.

Mongo in book 6 — The Eye of the Bedlam Bride

Level 40 by the mound (ch. 39); on slug duty, snatching SlugPox slugs from the air (ch. 15, ch. 16); a movie star in a Titan vid (ch. 21); eats a legendary Ciguapa before anyone can read her (ch. 27); kills Robert the Human in one bite in Donut's first solo fight (ch. 37); goes through tens of thousands of turkeys like a weed whacker and wakes up unconscious and sliding toward a cliff (ch. 41, ch. 42); saves Carl from Alpha Carl's foot (ch. 46). His right wing is burned off by Self-Immolation; a vinegar-enhanced potion will regrow it (ch. 71, ch. 72). Afraid of stairs (ch. 65).

Mongo in book 7 — This Inevitable Ruin

A lost wing regrown in an hour by a potion the vinegar goddess touched (ch. 2, ch. 3); a meatball he swallows and yaks back up (ch. 5); a Kiwi who goes to him low and uncertain and a Tina bouncing 'Pa-pa' (ch. 13). He is credited with an empress (ch. 27), sniffs the air before the door opens (ch. 12), is skanked and sprayed and dropped from trees (ch. 15), and eats the meat out of androids like a crab bake (ch. 31). Gustavo 3 quills him from the inside and shakes him by the throat; Rend saves him; Lucia pours the healing potion (ch. 72). Muscle Mommy makes him a quarter stronger (ch. 77). He backs away screeching from the news that he is going to be a daddy (ch. 80), stands by Kiwi's cot at her request (ch. 82), and chews a warlord's biomechanical heart to death: the kill credit for Epitome Tagg goes to pet Mongo, 'a present for the baby shower' (ch. 84). His daughters are Ursensus, legendary, and go to the twelfth floor with their mother (ch. 82, ch. 85).

Mongo in book 8 — A Parade of Horribles

Donut's seat in the truck, then a horn: 'Make way for the big shot' (ch. 3, ch. 5). He gets the Nemes of Pestilence and kukri claw caps (ch. 8, ch. 90); he guards Hedy and, once Jamal is down from the ceiling, curls up next to him (ch. 44); he lands tail-first in a bar fight and eats a fairy (ch. 57); he tea-bags a dead mimic (ch. 86) and marches the parade on foot (ch. 90).
